I love Foobar as a quick/mini player, for managing multiple playlists side by side, and for some particular utility functions like the ABX tracks plugin (double blind test yourself comparing two tracks – the only way to know for sure what bitrate / format differences you can truly hear). But it doesn't come at all close as a replacement for the large library management and filtering functionality of Winamp unfortunately (for me at least). It also has a weird long standing bug of the seek bar not working for flac files. But still a highly recommended piece of software for sure!

Apologies for continuing off topic here, but I need to change my recommendation from maps.me to Organic Maps: https://organicmaps.app/ It is basically an actively developed open source upgrade to Maps.me, and after testing it for a while now I have found it to bring a number of improvements. Also, for car navigation I came across Waze, which uses crowd sourced traffic/road info: https://www.waze.com/ And then coincidentally another friend happened to mention it to me today:- 158 replies

Thanks, and yes, I've been having a quick look into it more now, and that does seem to be the important parameters. There's a few other points mentioned here: https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/things-consider-linux-smartphone-os/ I hadn't considered the idea of a dual boot phone before which seems like an interesting approach. You could keep your daily driver OS more open source and private (e.g. Linux), while having a more "standard" Android OS just for running say Google Maps. I anticipate potential problems keeping communications synced between the two, but I think it can work OK with the right choice of messaging app. It might be simpler though just to have two different phones (like I have separate ones for comms and GPS navigation respectively). There's really quite a spectrum of different options built upon the Linux kernel, with the main split between the Linux or Android operating environment built on top of that, and then further splits between more open source Android, or more Google and proprietary software Android. There's a nice little introduction to Linux phones in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSudn0qB6u0 It's coming from a less technical younger person's point of view, but not a bad overview all the same. I agree that choice of applications is probably the biggest issue, though I don't agree that there no motivation to develop open-source alternatives (the reality of what we have today clearly demonstrates otherwise). One important issue that doesn't seem to get much attention when considering alternatives is that any solution that requires rooting your phone can immediately make it incompatible with banking apps in particular. I don't like to do banking on my phone anyway, but an increasing number of banks are starting to make apps mandatory for login (there's a deeper issue here about non-technical corporate boardrooms making decisions about what hardware and software we can use). I wonder how compatibility is here with some of the purchased as new solutions. Presumably it is still an issue with the more Linux environment based ones. I also came across this table comparing a few different Linux phones: https://liliputing.com/phones

Yeah, and that's from two years ago. Did he ever make it to market yet? Seems unclear about who his initial target customers should be. And what is the story with content for it? Is it open and flexible in being easily able to display any 3D model or other 3D content sent to it? Also seemed a little suspicious that he didn't feel like actually showing us the greater depth potential mentioned. Interesting to see all the same thanks.

Looks like @jaybee83 already dug out an old thread on this here: https://notebooktalk.net/topic/413-clevo-p751dm2-g-xmg-u507-prema-bios/?do=findComment&comment=6802&_rid=111 https://www.nbrchive.net/xfa/sager-and-clevo.1017/Coffee Lake BIOS updates P751DM2-G/ The download link appears to be password protected but the invite to their Discord group in that archived post still appears to be active as one contact method, along with a Gmail/Hangouts address. As an alternative it looks like dsanke is still active on this forum: https://winraid.level1techs.com/u/dsanke So you could also try contacting them directly there.- 150 replies

I also came across this useful post recently on alternative search engines with their own indices: https://seirdy.one/posts/2021/03/10/search-engines-with-own-indexes/ As well as this article regarding the difficulty alternative crawlers have in competing against Google and Bing: https://www.fastcompany.com/90759792/with-google-dominating-search-the-internet-needs-crawl-neutrality- 158 replies

Yes, that is a particular benefit you reap from the Google spyware network 😄 ...but apparently you can get traffic info on Maps.me too now: https://mapsme.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360007174554-Map-layers-guides-traffic-info-subway-map-and-terrain-layer Though I have no idea where that info comes from or if / how intelligent it is at adjusting route in response. It also requires a data connection which kinda ruins the whole point of using an offline map provider in the first place in my view. I don't own a car myself, but I did use Maps.me for car navigation during a trip with my sister last year and it worked fine, giving the same or better route suggestions as Google (when compared at our AirBnB). They both suffer the same issue of not really knowing what the quality of the roads in question are like, which is more significant than traffic in much of the world. Though I guess if you are in the US, the traffic question is likely the more important factor.- 158 replies

Yeah, same here. I don't even have my phone switched on at the moment. I use Signal these days to stay in contact with people and just use the desktop app for that mainly. I'm still a little confused as to what the draw is of having a Linux phone over simply a Google-free Android and/or custom ROM. Is it for more control and configurability? Or is there certain Linux software that would be useful to run on it?

Thanks for the reference links! I use Startpage as my standard searcher which gives Google's results but without the Google tracking (and also a nicer UI and range of settings available). But if you want a truly different angle on things you probably need to use a competitor with their own independent crawler: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_web_search_engines E.g. I was trying out both Mojeek and Gigablast recently, and they do seem to be useful for certain kinds of searches at least. Though I'm still inclined to stick with Startpage for default casual usage. Regarding Google Maps – it really depends on how you use it. I agree it has some particular features which are hard to replicate elsewhere, but I really hate it's map rendering style. It is overly abstracted to a series of points, with no sense given of the real geography (except via satellite view). It is also overly orientated around urbanite car drivers. Walking and cycling routes, and the entirety of the natural landscape, are completely missing from it. So on desktop I tend to use both it and Open Street Map in parallel. Google mainly just for its search and satellite, and OSM for actually understanding geography and seeing the fine details. On phone I rely completely on Maps.me for navigation (based on OSM, but with nicer rendering IMO and also works fully offline). The only time I ever use Google Maps on phone is if I'm travelling without a laptop and wish to look up reviews for restaurants. Google have also made the app slower and slower over the years to the point it is barely usable on my phone.- 158 replies

Yeah, that was my impression too. I've made a new thread for Google-free Android here now: https://notebooktalk.net/topic/500-google-free-android/ The first ever thread in that sub-forum, my 69th post, and the 500th thread in the forum... 😄 EDIT: How do you have 699 posts already!!? ❤️

Seeing as I hardly ever use any Google apps in the first place, I was considering transitioning to a "de-Googlefied" Android setup sometime in the not too distant future and thought it could be a good topic to start a thread on. I have one friend who has done this already and seems to work ok for them outside of some notification issues with certain apps that they don't care about anyhow. Is there anyone here with experience of this? What are your thoughts? Below are some resources I have to hand on this subject. Please post if you have any others! [Note that since I have not gone down this road myself, I cannot speak from experience for most of the below. So try at your own risk etc.] Edit: See my follow-up post below which might be a better starting point: Background general reading: Alternative app stores and repositories: Services (Micro-G): Alternatives to Google apps:

Definitely. Though I think an Android fully open source version / custom ROM free of any Google proprietary bits is pretty much equivalent in that regard? Though always good to have choice between some different projects. Murena sell "de-Googled" phones for example: https://murena.com/smartphones/ https://murena.com/shop/ I have some other resources related to providing a Google-free Android experience. Maybe should start a separate thread on that subject... I think Teracube is an alternative option in the US, though not sure how great they look tbh: https://myteracube.com/ Another project I forgot to mention in the original post is the Monocles phone, but not sure if that is still an active project: https://monocles.wiki/index.php?title=Monocles_phone_x Yeah, it seems like you inevitably have to pay a premium to not be evil when it comes to tech unfortunately. And I figure it's still even better than any new option just to use older / second-hand phones and keep them working for longer. Though I suppose part of the whole idea around Fairphone and the like is that they are easier to maintain or upgrade, and should hoepfully therefore last you a longer time.

In case any of you missed this and would like to relive your youth: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLPDKbt9NN2xuo6-sk3htUgyQq2WLD0Xzx I tried it once with friends a while ago and it was easy to set up and good fun. Worked pretty well, maybe the odd minor glitch, though we never got a round to trying the Community Updater which is supposed to bring a fair amount of improvement. You can switch back and forth between the new and original graphics with a button press while playing. Pretty shocking to see how bad the original graphics now look recalling how blown away with them I was at the time 😄 Here's all the download links for quick reference:

DJ Krush & Toshinori Kondo - Ki Oku (Full Album) [1996] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gm8H168uzpY P.S. I've never managed to get the YouTube embeds working on this forum, and who knows how they will be preserved for posterity. So maybe it is more helpful to post a direct link as well as the embed like this? I also like the idea from @6730b to post titles considering how quickly videos seem to disappear again from YouTube!

I've been looking for an alternative that works well on Linux for years so I can finally ditch Windows, but I've never been able to find anything that comes remotely close in functionality and UI/UX for managing large collections and the flexibility of dynamic organisations available via Smart Views (e.g. I use one to prioritise playing music that I haven't heard recently, weighted by the rating of the track. It's like my own personalised ideal radio stream :). I'm hoping the new cross-platform version might in the future provide a pathway for getting the current full desktop experience over to Linux, though I imagine that's still some years away.

Great news for Winamp fans! Looks like development is firmly back on track now after the many years in limbo with two separate branches being worked on. One will be a continuation of the current 5.x for Windows, with a v5.9 due in a few weeks, and an optional online services view in the pipeline. The other will be a completely separate Winamp 6 development branch which will be cross-platform, but presumably a much longer road to reach maturity: http://forums.winamp.com/showpost.php?p=3219772&postcount=2354 http://forums.winamp.com/showpost.php?p=3220285&postcount=2373 I'm still on good old v5.666, since its always worked perfectly for me, but apart from v5.8 (which is supposed to have performance benefits on newer versions of Windows), there is also the separate WACUP community project as an alternative.
