I can't do anything on a PC/laptop in bed. Although this of course looks different, since you basically have a table above the bed, and the bed itself allows for a sitting position. But this looks weird still. Must not show it to my wife - she's going to want this for sure

Precision M4600 Owners Thread
serpro69 replied to Hertzian56's topic in Pro Max & Precision Mobile Workstation
@raptorddd, it's already here ;) -
Have been using the regular S7 version since it came out and absolutely enjoy it for media/reading/etc. Very nice battery life also. My only complaint is that it doesn't seem very popular with modders, so very limited options when it comes to custom ROMs, root, etc.

Haha, I like that approach My own opinion probably matches about 50% the time with an average score on IMDB. Sometimes I completely disagree with the overrated ratings for the cr*p that's been coming out past years, other times it's more or less spot on. My main use-case for IMDB though is not to decide whether to watch something or not, but to keep track of the stuff that I've watched.

Started watching Halo. 2 episodes in so far. Can't say I'm impressed or anything, the acting is anything but great, and some characters don't seem to make much sense at all. But the action scenes make this show fun enough to watch anyways. I have to say I haven't played the game, read the books or anything, so I can't really judge the accuracy compared to the "source". The reviews on IMDB are horrible though But I'll probably keep watching - for me it's good enough for a one-time thing. I also enjoy nature documentaries a lot :) Nice to see I'm not the only one. It's a really nice way to relax while watching the beautiful planet we live on. My favorites are probably Blue Planet and Planet Earth.

1) I'm not sure how an OS being open source qualifies for "fully compatible with Alder Lake" 2) Ubuntu can be modular enough for most users, but it's by any means not "fully modular". If you want fully modular - go with Arch. It's also a well-known fact that a lot of Ubuntu packages are often outdated, and on Ubuntu LTS (e.g. 20.04) - even more so. My Ubuntu 20.04 runs on 5.13 kernel right now and I don't believe it will get 5.17+ anytime soon. 3) There is a big difference between "can be fully compatible" and "is fully compatible". Windows 10 also "can be fully compatible", but it isn't (at the moment). 4) There is also a difference between "Linux" and "Ubuntu". Updating kernel and packages to latest versions on Ubuntu LTS is a huge PIA and I personally would rather go with another Linux OS at that point that attempt to keep all packages up to date. I'm pretty sure by the time new Precision series come out - they will start offering Alder Lake based systems with Ubuntu 22.04 (which will also be out by that time and will have latest kernel version with at least partial support for Alder lake) instead of Ubuntu 20.04. My guess is that currently they offer Ubuntu 20.04 because they've always had Ubuntu as an option, and the next LTS version is yet to be released. So despite it not having full support out of the box for Alder Lake, they still need to offer some version of Ubuntu (Linux). And that's what I meant by my initial post regarding Ubuntu 20.04. Glad my post made you register on this forum. Would also wish your manners were better... but that's really your problem, not mine. I guess it's a matter of culture / upbringing, and some people just can't help but try to show their "superior knowledge" by calling opinions they don't agree with - "stupid". That said, you can save yourself a few keystrokes and not reply to my post, I certainly will ignore yours going forward.

It very much appears to be so. I just can't buy that they don't offer Win10 purely out of compatibility issues with Alder Lake, but at the same time offer Ubuntu 20.04

introduction Microsoft Office - Free Alternatives
serpro69 replied to cucubits's topic in General Software
Have been using LibreOffice for years and I usually prefer it on both Linux and Windows OSes, so my vote goes to LibreOffice for sure. The only compatibility problems with MS that I found so far is with .opt -> .ppt file conversion - it just does not work well for some reason. But if you keep the files in MS Office formats, then there's no big compatibility issues that I've seen for Word/Excel files (although I must say that my usage of office tools is quite limited)- 18 replies

OpenShot is supposed to be very user friendly even for beginners, AFAIK.

I could understand 5470 as an "ultra-light" (probably not ultra-light, but still lighter and more compact) version of the 5x70 series, but 7470... I'm not sure that makes much sense for me. Very interesting discoveries @Aaron44126.

Not sure what features Windows Photos has, but have you tried some FOSS (Free Open-Source Software) stuff that's out there? Like OpenShot, Flowblade or Natron, to name a few.

Yeah, I'm not planning to move to Win11 myself, maybe not even when LTSC comes out, but that really depends on the state of Win11 and what LTSC itself has under the hood at that time. And besides, my main daily OS is still Linux and I switch to Windows only for gaming. So all in all, I couldn't care less if MS decides to backport thread director to Win10 or not. But it would be a shame if Win10 compatibility with Alder Lake would somehow delay Dell releasing mobile Precision series. Although, I don't think that would actually happen. In the end, however much pressure MS puts on them when it comes to software, Dell and other OEMs have first and foremost their own business to think of.

What if that doesn't happen (or takes too long). I really wouldn't bet on Microsoft to accommodate users in a good and timely way when it comes to this. I wonder if that would delay Dell's Alder Lake business systems, or they'd just ship them with Win11.

Watching 'The Good Place'. I saw it some years ago, but my wife never did, so decided she might like it and was spot on. Definitely recommend to watch for anyone who hasn't seen it before if you're looking for a light and funny comedy TV show.

Spiderman: No Way Home. I must say I haven't seen a comic-book-based movie in years which I have enjoyed, and this wasn't an exception. That's probably all I'm going to say about it.

Logitech C920s webcam. My laptop runs with a closed lid 99% of the time and stands behind the external screen. Ever since pandemic started that was my main excuse for not turning on video in calls Most of the times it's not an issue, but sometimes I need to turn on the camera and it's annoying to have to disconnect the laptop and take it out. So two years later I thought to myself: "an external webcam it is then"

Looks neat. What made you go with with Pop_OS? Does it have any benefits that you saw compared to other debian-like systems? I think I read somewhere that it's more gaming-oriented than say Debian or Ubuntu.

I like good graphics, but I never really felt the need for "super realistic graphics" in games. For me the gameplay is much more important.

Tried FarCry3 yesterday. I generally like games with huge open world, so this one is good so far.

10-20 degrees warmer without an IETS cooler? This is an impressive improvement if the results are accurate.

Yeah, I don't believe anyone will pay subscription fee for Windows, apart from maybe corporate users that don't have a choice. But what is mentioned in the article that I linked above, is "Microsoft rents you preconfigured Windows 10 PCs". To me this sounds like they want to supply hardware with pre-installed Windows OS for a fee, rather than simply adding a subscription fee for only the OS.

"It's not a bug, it's a feature" (c) Microsoft I was wondering what the heck they're calling Desktop As A Service. I don't know about you guys, but if I read between the lines, to me it sounds like this: Microsoft, instead of you, gets to install all the annoying Windows 10 feature updates that you never wanted, spyware can't be disabled anymore, and other fixes that you shouldn't touch with a 10ft pole get pushed without you even noticing it. All this for a monthly subscription fee. Umm, thanks, but no thanks... even if the payment was going the other way around, from them to me.

Please mention what laptop(s) you tested it with when you write a review. It seems that this cooler performs well with some laptops and poor with others.
