*Official Benchmark Thread* - Post it here or it didn't happen :D
K4sum1 replied to Mr. Fox's topic in Desktop Hardware
I wonder if we'll be able to shrink dies much more without needing to return to direct die cooling. Maybe direct die liquid metal could become the norm, or maybe exotic cooling like phase change could become common. -
I got some SYY-157, and tried it on my 3770K. I delidded it and used SYY-157 under the IHS and above it for the heatsink, but the temperatures are kinda warm for stock voltage, like 80s under load. I have a similar system but 4790K using liquid metal under IHS, NT-H2 above, same cooler, and it runs like 20C cooler. Does liquid metal under IHS make this big of a difference or is something else going on?

What phone are you daily driving currently?

I might upgrade to the upcoming Zenfone 9 or Xperia 5 IV when they get a bit old and go on sale. (Or used) -

This is Windows 7 updated to 2020-01 (and 2016-09) made using MSMG Toolkit and NTLite. It also includes USB 3 and NVMe drivers, .Net 4.8, .Net 6, IE11, VC++, and more. This is download at your own risk, but I haven't seen installing Windows break anything, so you'll probably be fine. https://www.mediafire.com/file/1bzfgtsnxjgyor4/Windows+7+Updated+v4.iso/file A few things to note: 1: Windows may hang during OOBE (after you set up your account and whatever). During this stage updates for .Net 4.8 are installed. If you don't care for these updates, you can delete all three of them from (ISO)\sources\$OEM$\$$\Setup\Files\ 2: This uses the Windows 8.1 boot.wim, so booting into setup will show the 8+ boot animation. 3: This includes Home Premium, Professional, and Ultimate, and each edition is in both 2016-09 and 2020-01 form. All 6 are inside this one ISO that can fit onto a DVD. You go to select whichever one you want during setup. 4: If you have a UASP device, please let me know if it causes an increase in startup time.

introduction Compression software - any reason to prefer WinRAR/WinZIP to 7-Zip?
K4sum1 replied to Sandy Bridge's topic in Windows
For general purpose stuffs I use the fork 7-zip-zstd. For long term archival I use FreeArc. I think a long time ago I had a pirated copy of WinRAR (I think it came with a pirated version of a game), but I've mainly used 7-zip for as long as I can remember.- 13 replies

Good numbers? (hd power on \ ssd writes \ OS install)
K4sum1 replied to 6730b's topic in Components & Upgrades
WD software doesn't support 7, and I'm not sure where I can find a version that works on 7. -
Hmm, yeah. I usually just buy the cheapest new battery. I don't like old OEM batteries as they bloat up real quick.

Windows 7 (with update), 8.1, and 10 all use the same NVMe driver. That shouldn't matter. -

I have a few SSDs in my main system. I have a few others, might post pics of my other SSDs when I'm not lazy. Also anyone know how to view stats on M.2 SSDs? I use Windows 7, and I can say that you don't need to worry about that. -
Looks like anyone could make one with 6 fans and a power brick. I literally have everything I need laying around.

How many spinning hard drives do you have in your desktop?
K4sum1 replied to Sandy Bridge's topic in Desktop Hardware
The amount of hard drives I have changes all the time, I currently have 3, but soon I want to have 1 or 0 in my system. I currently have 3 4TB drives, and 2 3TB drives, I'm thinking of compacting my data to it fits onto 7TB, and do a RAID 1 setup with a NAS, and use the leftover 4TB for my PC. -
This is probably your exact idea, but this is what I'm thinking. Get a big cardboard box, big enough to cover your system. Get two ducts, and cut two holes into your box, one hole for each. Make one duct the intake, and the other the outtake. Likely best to put the intake at the bottom, and the outtake at the top. You would likely want a few big fans to encourage the air to move around.

I'm in the very early stages of planning for a SFF build, all I know is that I want to get a Node 202, and do the water cooling mod.

It think it would be cheaper and better to get a used flagship and unlock the bootloader. Even if you want something high end, phone efficiency is plateauing, so you wouldn't miss much getting a used SD855 phone. When the used flagship breaks, carefully replace the stuffs in it. If you can work on laptops and not break stuff, you can work on a phone too.

I have downgraded to the Linksys E3200 because I like Tomato, it's smaller, and it uses less power. I don't have much use for 802.11ac, so I'm fine with it.

I know it's possible to have the full post content be in notification emails for Invision based boards. It's pretty useful when reading messages, as I can just read the emails I get instead of going to the forum, finding the oldest unread message, then reading.

I like my big laptops, and not being able to swap stuffs cringe.
