If I list all of my hardware that has died, this list would be too long, but here are some of the more expensive failures I've had. Lenovo Flex 3 1580 - Died due to failed BIOS update, appears to be bricked so hard that flashing the proper BIOS with an external flasher does nothing. MSI GS60-2QE - Still works, but one of the RAM slots doesn't work, I tried reflowing it, but I don't have the proper tools and I didn't get it hot enough I guess. Probably gonna sell this, eventually. 980m 8GB - Some part of it died, trying to figure out which.

Janktop IV Sneak Peek (open source MINI ITX Laptop)
K4sum1 replied to StripeySnake's topic in Custom Builds
This is pretty cool, but I'm not sure if I like some of the ideas. Having an integrated keyboard is cool and all, but I think that space could be better used to replace those small noisy fans with some good sized 120mm fans and radiators, while also making the case a bit shorter. I also think it might be better to get one of those tiny power supplies that get power from a power brick instead of a server PSU. -
Seeing how laptops are getting more and more locked down and power restricted is making me think that maybe a SFF PC could be a better portable workstation than a laptop. Desktop replacements do have some advantages, like the battery functioning as a UPS, integrated display, smaller size, etc, etc. However I've recently been thinking that it might be better to have a thin and light 13-15 in laptop to take wherever, and have a SFF PC for long trips or when more power might be needed. SFF PCs are much easier to work on and replace stuffs than laptops, assuming you have a decent case. There is also more expandability, as decent boards can support 4 or more drives. It also uses desktop parts for everything, which are usually significantly cheaper than their laptop counterparts. This has led me to think that maybe I should just build a SFF gaming PC instead of repairing my 8770W or buying a newer laptop, but I still like the all in one nature of laptops, so I'm not sure.

Kinda late in doing this, but whatever. I'm K4sum1, I used to go by R3n on the NotebookReview forums. I am a dummy that has an interest in laptops both big and small, as long as they can run anything older than Windows 10. I also like to curse, a lot, which could get me banned at some point, but whatever. I currently have 6 laptops, some working, some not working. From oldest to newest, I have the Toshiba L505D-S5983 (broken), Acer Aspire One, Thinkpad T430 (with 3630QM), HP 8770W (broken GPU), MSI GS60-2QE (kinda working), and Lenovo Flex 3 1580 (broken). I wish to, in the future, expand my collection with one or more of the following, X201 (1440x900), HP 6930p, Latitude Z, M4800, M6800, T480 (MX150), MSI Modern 14 (ix 10xxxU, MX350), and/or the Clevo P751DM. Other than laptops, I'm interested in desktops and most other types of computers, including phones.

So, I tried the thing, but it only gets this far. Usually it reboots instantly after showing this, but sometimes it hangs.

As far as I can tell, it appears to be one of the few 14in laptops that have a u series 10th gen Intel CPU + MX350 graphics + replaceable RAM/storage/WiFi card, however I have no way to confirm any of this since so little information exists about it out in the wild. I'm wondering if anyone can find more information about it.

9900t sounds like a better fit, it performs around a 2700X, but eBay prices are a bit expensive. -

I think those can be bootloader unlocked, which would allow you to replace the entire OS.- 168 replies

What have you upgraded on your current laptop(s)?
K4sum1 replied to Sandy Bridge's topic in Components & Upgrades
I want to get a new card for my 8770W eventually (probably either gonna fix my 980m or upgrade to the 1070), but I bought a T430 as something more portable that I can browse the web on and play some lighter games. For now I put the 3630QM and 16GB of RAM that was in my 8770W in the T430, but I'm not sure what else I should do. Probably should have just dealt with my 980m from my 8770W being broken until I could fix it, but I have wanted something a bit more portable. -

K4sum1 replied to Sandy Bridge's topic in Components & Upgrades
Why is such a complex mod needed for a card (1070), which fits just fine in other older laptops like the 8770W? -

I didn't know Librewolf existed, thanks for posting about it, I'll have to check it out. I've been thinking of switching to Firefox Developer Edition, but I think I'd prefer a more Waterfox style fork that follows current Firefox releases, and Librewolf seems to be it.- 168 replies

K4sum1 replied to Katja's topic in Mobile Devices & Gadgets
For someone, like me, who likes collecting old smartphones, that might make them even cheaper to buy. -
Well, I decided to put the old FirePro M4000 it came with back in. I'm not sure what is wrong, but it's not something that can be easily fixed.

https://files.catbox.moe/1vsfgo.mp4 Video is shaky because I've rerecorded this a few times, so my arm was getting tired. I think it's a VRAM issue since it crashes to a screen that has a color, however I think it's fully dead as this is after modding the BIOS to have a lower core clock, and a 1000MHz lower memory clock. Windows 10 is the only one that sometimes boots in normal mode, 8.1/10 are the only ones that sometimes boots into safe mode. Safe mode doesn't crash if I can get it to boot, but the artifacts are still there.

I looked at the tests I found, and it doesn't seem like very good testing. It appears they did only one of each test, and when they did multiple tests, they took the maximum instead of the median or mean. I'll probably have to do some tests myself, however, I'm also very lazy. One thing I do know is that WDDM 1.0 has better smoothness, could be due to rendering the UI in DX 9 instead of DX 11 in 7, but I'm not sure. 7 runs better without GPU drivers installed, no matter the vendor or driver version. I also think I heard that with the platform update and supplement, the RAM usage is about on par with 7 when a WDDM 1.1 driver is used. (WDDM 1.1 is compatible with 1.0) It is something I'd have to test though. 8.x does perform better and is more stable than 7. I usually stick with 7 though due to better compatibility than 8 (artificial incompatibility sucks), and 7 just looks better.
-
Actually, that is what happened. If anything, 7 is slightly slower compared to Vista on equivalent hardware.
